With warm weather ongoing and snow melting, the last thing many want to hear about is cold air returning along with the threat of a winter storm. However, we live in Pennsylvania and it’s February so this should not be a surprise. While some regions have already received the majority of their average seasonal snowfall, others have yet to pick up an inch or two of snow the entire season to this point.

A low pressure system will swing through the Plains and Midwest, bringing us rain and warm weather through Wednesday. By Thursday a cold front will sweep through, bringing PA and surrounding areas temperatures in the 30s as daytime highs. This will last into the weekend along with high pressure that will result in dry conditions.

As we head into early-mid next week, there is likely to be energy in both the northern and southern stream. Whether they phase or not is yet to be determined. Phasing of the streams often forms major winter storms, but even if it doesn’t occur significant winter storms can still develop. Furthermore, with El Nino constantly pumping energy into the southern stream, it is very possible that a storm forms in the Gulf Coast area and brings our region some type of winter storm. There is a good chance cold air will be in place.

Right now there is no way to have confidence in any specific, as models are just beginning to latch onto this possible event. The potential is undoubtedly there, now it’s a question of what mother nature will do with that potential. Stay tuned as we will provide many more details on this possible storm in the coming days.
