A clipper system will transfer its energy to Virginia spreading light to moderate snow throughout PA. Although this will not be a major event, it will still impact travel especially Tuesday Morning. Here is what we are looking at as far as timing.
Light snow will move into Western PA Monday Evening and spread east into Central PA Monday Night. By Tuesday Morning, moderate snow is likely to be falling from the Laurel Highlands to the Lower Susquehanna Valley. Light snow will be falling across Western PA, Northern PA, now extending into Eastern PA.
By Tuesday Afternoon, snow showers will remain scattered in Western PA with areas of moderate snow across Southern PA. Light snow is expected to be coming down in Eastern PA. By Tuesday Evening, only flurries will remain across Western PA with light snow still likely in Southcentral and Southeastern PA. Even the Allentown area could still be experiencing light snow.
Although temperatures will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s when the snow is falling, upper and mid levels of the atmosphere will be very cold and this will result in more of a powdery snow. Wet snow is possible but that will mainly be due to compaction. The time-frame with biggest risk is Tuesday Morning and possibly even into the afternoon and evening as untreated roads will likely be snow covered.
We expect a widespread 1-3″ across the entire state of PA with 2-5″ of snow likely from the Laurel Highlands, through Southcentral PA to as far east as West Chester and Reading. There could be pockets of over 5″ especially in the Laurel Highlands, possibly into Southcentral PA. All snow that falls will stick around for quite a while as some of the coldest air of the season is likely late week which will last for an extended period.
