With temperatures cooling down and crisp mornings starting to become more common, we know fall foliage season is nearly here! Summer 2023 was a very wet summer across Eastern and Northern Pennsylvania, while areas near the MD line saw around average rainfall. Temperatures this summer were as close to average as you can get! We had far less 90 degree days than last year, which will work in our favor when it comes to fall foliage vibrancy! Last summer was hot and dry, which resulted in a short and full fall foliage season. The moral of the story is we are in for one of the best fall foliage seasons in several years!

First frost and freeze conditions are very close as well, with the Northern PA Mountains & Laurel Highlands just days away from their average first frost. Elsewhere, those conditions won’t be felt until well into October. Average temperatures play a big role in just when those leaves change color, but the shortening days and lower sun angle do as well. As we all know, days are getting shorter. We are losing about three minutes of sunlight a day, mostly in the evening. Let’s not talk about the sunset time in a month and a half from now!

PA State Parks are a great place to venture out to during fall foliage season, but don’t forget about state forests. Though often a bit more raw experience when it comes to trails and lack of lodging, they often feature equally good views and are much quieter! Remember, fall foliage season only lasts for about three to four weeks in any given location, so it’s important to make plans to get out there before it’s too late!
