NOAA 2022-2023 Winter Outlook Issued Today

As leaves begin to fade and temperatures turn colder, we know we’re approaching not only the holiday season, but the winter season as well. In a few weekends, clocks will fall back and sunset will soon be before 5:00pm. That’s typically when the realization that winter is approaching occurs.

NOAA released their 2022-2023 Winter Outlook today, Thursday, October 20. It accounts for various teleconnections around the globe, but none more than the expected weak La Nina. This will be the third winter straight with La Nina conditions.

La Nina usually favors below average temperatures in the Northern US, and above average temperatures in the Southern US along with the East Coast. Wetter than average conditions are favored in the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes.

However, there are many variables that can quickly make for a very cold stretch in unexpected areas. So this forecast does not equal what we will see every week of winter.

Josh has been passionate about weather as long as his memory dates! From watching the Weather Channel at age 7, to making hand-drawn hurricane maps at age 11, starting his first weather site at 13, and founding PWA at 15 and forecasting for the state for the past 9 years, Josh's interest in weather has never dwindled! As difficult as it is, he greatly enjoys forecasting for Pennsylvania due to its countless microclimates. The state is an East Coast severe weather hotspot and nearly always home to the rain/snow line during winter storms!
