With temperatures cooling and crisp, chilly mornings becoming more common, our fall foliage season is soon to begin! This is something to be excited about, as Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than anywhere else in the world! Plus, it gives us something to do outside after such a rough year that’s had us stuck indoors.

After a hot summer, we are entering a seasonably cool pattern which may stick around for a while. The next week will feature mainly below average temperatures, with a gradual warming trend by late week. However, we are seeing signs that temperatures will cool below average again heading into October due to favorable teleconnections for seasonably chilly weather.

To get the most vibrant colors we will need warm, sunny days and cool nights, but not freezing. And that is exactly what is expected, with a stretch of mainly dry and cool weather upcoming. Below is a long range model temperature outlook for early October that we agree with.

We predict a slightly earlier fall foliage peak than normal this year due to the cooler and drier than average conditions expected. Colors should be vibrant this year, and we will have a list of great spots to view fall foliage around the state soon! For now, here is when we anticipate fall foliage colors to peak around Pennsylvania.
