A sneaky severe weather threat has popped in the southeast quarter of the state this afternoon and evening. Today’s system has trended much more amplified and subsequently farther north. As a result, Southeast PA will find itself in the warm sector with high wind shear.
The main threats will be damaging winds and isolated tornadoes especially around the Philadelphia Metro. Model guidance is debating the placement of a line of severe storms, with I-78 likely the northern extent of severe potential. Farther north, moderate to heavy rain and rumbles of thunder.
TIMING: Strong storms will develop in South Central PA mainly south of the PA Turnpike (I-76) mid-afternoon and strengthen as they move east. The Lower Susquehanna Valley will likely see storms in the late afternoon with Southeast PA (Delaware Valley, possibly the Lehigh Valley) seeing severe weather by the evening before sunset.
Here is a look at forecast rainfall totals for today.
