Severe weather season has been dormant for the last few months here in Pennsylvania. We’re approaching peak severe storm season here in PA, so we’re well due for this potential! A low pressure moving across Ontario and Quebec will drag a cold front along with it, quenching the heat before it returns next week.
Damaging winds are the main concern, along with an isolated tornado and hail. Models have been shaky as usual as to where to place the storms. With some runs having the bulk of the activity in Northern PA and others south. Here’s a rough look at timing for this threat.
FUTURE RADAR TIMING
Strong to severe thunderstorms will likely fire up in Northern PA late Saturday afternoon. Due to the highly unstable environment, these storms will strengthen quickly. Here’s the Hi-Res NAM model for 5:00 PM Saturday showing those cells near Route 6.

As we move through dinnertime, a separate cluster of storms is expected to develop in Eastern Ohio and Southwest PA, impacting the Pittsburgh Metro. Storms in Northern PA will be pushing southeast, nearing I-80 by 7 PM Saturday.

As the sun sets, these storms will remain strong to severe as they enter a more linear mode. A line of storms in Eastern and Western PA is projected to be pushing southeast around 9 PM Saturday evening.

And finally by very late evening Saturday, storms are anticipated to reach the southern tier counties with a bit less intensity. As a result, the concern for damaging winds is lower farther south.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM THREAT FORECAST FOR SATURDAY

Area A: Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms expected late Saturday afternoon into the late evening. Damaging winds up to 70 MPH are the main threat, followed by isolated hail and a very isolated tornado possible.
Area B: Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible Saturday evening as storms enter this area. Damaging winds are the main concern, with isolated hail possible if storms develop farther south on Saturday.
As a final note, most graduation ceremonies should be unaffected, as these storms will develop later in the day.
With summer vibes in full swing, be sure to share this forecast with friends and family who may have outdoor plans Saturday!
